Welcome back to the SoundMouth weekly rock chart round-up, where I take a look at how rock's biggest names and brightest prospects are faring across the UK music charts.
The big story this week is Yonaka's debut album Don't Wait 'till Tomorrow, which has broken into the UK Albums Chart at number 38. Considering that this is their debut LP, this is not a bad result, although I did expect it to place slightly higher considering how much their fanbase has been growing recently. Still, the band have several gigs and festivals coming up this summer, including Truck and 2000 Trees, so the Yonaka gospel should continue to spread far and wide and see the album do even better.
The real point of contention for me is the Official Charts Company's bizarre decision to not count Don't Wait 'till Tomorrow in the rock album chart. Presumably this is down to the band's embracing of pop and indie sounds in their music. If OCC were a little more open-minded with their generic definitions, Yonaka would have hit the top spot this week, which feels like a real missed opportunity to me.
However, the album did score a position on the Vinyl Albums Chart, coming in at number 10. The wider rock scene is also still continuing to embrace Yonaka's fresh sound, with the band being currently nominated for a Kerrang! Award. You can read more about that here.
Moving on, Rammstein are enjoying their third consecutive week atop rock albums, while the self-titled LP is down to 45 on the main UK albums chart. The rest of the rock albums top 10 is comprised almost entirely of brand new releases, particularly from the world of extreme metal, with Darkthrone and Death Angel debuting at 2 and 5 respectively. Barriers, the latest alt. rock solo offering from former My Chemical Romance guitarist Frank Iero, has also debuted at number 6. I never would have predicted that a thrash metal band and a black metal band would each debut higher than Frank Iero, but here we are!
Just below Iero is rock's other favourite Frank, with End of Suffering by Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes moving up three spots from 10 to 7 in its fifth week. Last week I suggested that this album could prove to be the Hertfordshire punks' most successful to date, and it looks like that may well be an accurate prediction.
Next week's chart will coincide with the first day of the 2019 Download Festival, so it will be interesting to see how many acts from the stacked bill will find themselves climbing up the rock charts as fans gear up for the biggest festival in heavy music. Check back here in a week's time to see how things are shaping up. Until then, feast your eyes on my Kerrang! Awards preview article, where I run down my picks and predictions of the 2019 nominees. This year is a big one, folks!
