Between Foals dropping a new single, Tool finally adding their discography to streaming services, and Slipknot releasing their brand new album, last week was a big one for rock and metal. As always, I'm here with a round-up of how rock's biggest names have fared across the UK charts this week and there's plenty to talk about, so let's get stuck in!
'Rewind, Replay, Rebound', the new album from American metallers Volbeat has received something of a mixed response since its release last week, but that didn't stop it from nabbing the top spot on the Rock & Metal Albums Chart. The album also managed to make an impressive impact on the main UK Albums Chart, coming in at a very respectable number 7 in a testament to the band's growing popularity.
As mentioned, Tool finally moving with the times and making their entire back-catalogue available for streaming was a huge moment in the world of metal. Unsurprisingly, the decision is already paying off for the band in a big way. All four of Tool's full-length LPs, plus their 1992 EP 'Opiate', have broken into the Rock & Metal Albums Chart this week, with 'Lateralus' faring best of all by taking the number 4 spot.
Usually I focus on the albums chart in this series, since the Rock & Metal Singles Chart tends to be dominated by the same classic rock regulars. However, indie rock heavyweights Foals have managed to buck the trend this week with their new track 'Black Bull', which nestled itself in at number 12. By briefly looking back through the Official Charts Company archive I was able to verify that this is, somewhat bafflingly, actually the first time Foals have ever been included on this chart. Despite being one of the biggest alternative music acts in the world for a decade now, Foals are typically viewed as too 'indie' for the heavy rock scene, but this the raw fury of 'Black Bull' means its inclusion on this week's chart was essential. Props to the OCC for recognising this one!
Tool have also returned to the rock singles chart, with their classic track 'Schism' coming in at 32 after receiving streams aplenty last week. Surprisingly, this was the first time this song has ever been on the chart, despite being released as a single way back in 2001.
Looking ahead to next week, there's only one album worth speculating about: Slipknot's rabidly-anticipated new album 'We Are Not Your Kind'. At the time of writing, it has been speculated that this new record from the Iowa metal legends will take the top spot on the UK Albums Chart, knocking Ed Sheeren off the top spot in the process. Whether that glorious prediction comes true or not, it is beyond any doubt that the album will top Rock & Metal Albums at the very least, and we will probably see a few tracks crop up on Rock Singles too.
Until next week, thanks for reading!
