After taking a break last week, I'm back again with my weekly round-up of how rock's biggest names and breakthrough stars are fairing on the UK charts! There's loads to talk about this week, from new releases to chart-affecting factors like Glastonbury hype, Metallica's UK tour and Kerrang! Awards fallout, so let's get stuck in!
First up, let's talk about American metal quartet Baroness. They scored their highest chart position to date when their great new record Gold & Grey debuted at No. 1 on the Rock & Metal Albums Chart last week. The album is now down to 8, with the new LP from classic rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires now taking the top spot in Baroness' absence.
Metallica's recent UK live dates received huge praise from fans and critics last week, with the continuing Metallica-fever having impacted the chart in a big way. The thrash veterans currently have five albums in the rock top 40, including a re-entering Hardwired at 31. The fallout from those huge stadium shows in Manchester and London is also having a similarly positive effect for the tour's opening bands. Ghost have two albums re-entering the chart this week, namely 2016's Meliora at 32 and last year's Prequelle at 12. The latter record also just won the Kerrang! Award for Best Album, which undoubtedly drove more people to stream Prequelle and helped secure its new spot.
Just below Ghost, End of Suffering by Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes has dropped from 8 to 13 after spending a very impressive seven weeks in the rock albums top 10, while Norwegian rockers Bokassa, who joined Ghost in supporting Metallica last week, have debuted at 21 with their latest offering, Crimson Riders.
Bring Me the Horizon (pictured right at All Points East) were in danger of dropping out of the top 40 last week, but the increased interest ahead of their performance at Glastonbury this weekend has seen amo bounce back from 39 to a much more comfortable 28. Since this is set to be BMTH's first-ever performance at the world's most iconic festival, there will likely be a lot of people discovering the band for the first time over the coming days, especially with the set being due to air on TV*. This means that we can expect to see amo stick around on the rock albums chart for a while yet and extend its 22-week stint even further.
Based on what we've seen with Metallica and Ghost this week, it seems like its in the aftermath of a huge gig that a band can really shake things up on the charts, rather than in the build-up. With that said, next week we'll see exactly how much the fallout from Glastonbury affects the UK charts, along with all the regularly-scheduled updates on new entries. Korn and Neck Deep have just dropped new tracks, so there's a good chance the rock singles chart will be worth talking about for once! Until then, check out my review of Metallica's Manchester Etihad gig if you haven't already and also look forward to my new pop Top 40 recap very soon!
Thanks for reading,
- Danny
* Edit - 30/06/19: Annoyingly, BMTH's performance didn't actually air on TV or iPlayer in the end, so maybe the impact won't be as big as I speculated...
